Suffolk County and Breast Cancer Help Team Up to Purchase State-of-the-Art Radiosurgery Equipment for the University Medical Center at Stony Brook

Non-Profit and Government Working Together to Improve
Quality of Health Care for Long Islanders

Stony Brook, NY – In an unique example of government, a non-profit organization and a health care provider working together to improve the quality of health care available to Long Islanders, Suffolk County Executive Robert J. Gaffney delivered a check for $250,000 to the University Medical Center at Stony Brook, which will be combined with a $100,000 contribution from Breast Cancer Help, Inc., for the delivery of the second of three modules of the Novalis Laser Surgery machine, which helps in the treatment of many types of cancer. The second module will be housed with the first module at the Radiation-Oncology department at the university.

Breast Cancer Help, which spearheaded the efforts to bring this advanced Radiosurgery system to Long Island, is seeking an additional $1.6 million through fundraising, as well as public and private sector contributions, to purchase the third module, providing Long Islanders with only the second such advanced Radiosurgery system in the world, following the one at University of California Los Angeles Medical Center.

John Pace, General Counsel and Secretary of Breast Cancer Help, Inc., praised the County Executive for his vision and long-standing support in the fight against cancer.             “Bob Gaffney is not only a man who rules with his mind, but with his heart,” said Pace.   Pace went on to say that “the purchase of this equipment is vital in the fight against cancer on Long Island. As we work to find causes and cures in the laboratory, we must be able to treat people who have cancer today.             This equipment will help to save the lives of many cancer patients, not only those with breast cancer and brain cancer but other cancers as well.” Pace also thanked two of Long Island’s largest companies, Keyspan Energy and Grand Union, for their help in making Breast Cancer Help’s contribution possible, as well as             Promote Long Island, for all the free advertising they did for Breast Cancer Help, Inc. He also singled out, Shear Instincts, a West Islip beauty salon, for its efforts in raising nearly $20,000 over the last two years on behalf of Breast Cancer Help.

County Executive Gaffney helped procure the funds as part of his efforts to ensure that Suffolk residents have the most advanced medical care available to them. “It is our privilege to have the world-class Cancer Institute of Long Island located in Suffolk County,” said the County Executive.             “It is our responsibility to ensure that all county residents can benefit from its facilities.” The County’s contract with the University Medical Center stipulates that the hospital will make the system available to treat enrollees of the Suffolk Health Plan. The Suffolk Health Plan provides Medicaid-managed healthcare coverage to eligible low-income and uninsured individuals and families.

An improvement over traditional radiosurgery, the Novalis’ integrated computer driven design can provide more precisely shaped radiation fields with perfect dose distribution. According to Dr. Allen Meek, “the Novalis radiosurgery system non-invasively treats tumors of cancer patients without damage to the surrounding tissues. This accurate and efficient system has the highest precision of any radiosurgery system. It tracks the movement of patients whereas other systems do not.             We are two-thirds of the way to providing Long Islanders with the most advanced Radiosurgery system in the world.”

Breast Cancer Help, Inc. is a not-for-profit grass roots organization with a focus on action and advocacy to eradicate breast cancer.             Founded in 1994 by Lorraine Pace, a breast cancer survivor, and Father Thomas Arnao, the group promotes education and awareness of breast cancer issues. Pace was also the founder of the West Islip breast cancer mapping project, which pinpointed breast cancer clusters.             This mapping has now spread to other parts of New York, the U.S. and abroad.
