Lorraine Pace Named to Suffolk County Women’s “Wall of Fame”

August 2, 2010

Lorraine Pace, Co-President, Breast Cancer Help, Inc., was one of 29 women inducted into the Suffolk County Women’s “Wall of Fame” during a ceremony at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge on July 13.

The “Women’s Wall of Fame” recognizes recipients of the county’s prestigious honor since the award was established in 1994. Installed in the southwest corner of the Dennison Building plaza level, the new wall features individual plaques with the names and pictures of those women who have been honored so far.

Ms. Pace, of West Islip, is responsible for starting over 25 coalitions in the United States, including Long Island, New York and abroad. She is also responsible for starting minority coalitions. She has served as Co-President of Breast Cancer Help since 1994. Prior to that, she formed the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. in 1992.

Under her leadership, Breast Cancer Help made a significant donation to Stony Brook University Medical Center in 2001 by providing the medical facility its first-ever digital mammography unit on Long Island. Breast Cancer Help has also provided approximately $2.5 million in medical diagnostic equipment to Stony Brook. In addition, Breast Cancer Help has donated $120,000 to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and a second digital mammography unit to North Shore LIJ-Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

Ms. Pace has also worked with town officials in cracking down on bogus drop-off clothing bins, which claim to go to local charities but send the money off Long Island. Working with Earthrite Textile, Breast Cancer Help has 150 clothing bins throughout Long Island and Queens County and has collected over $1 million from sales proceeds of used clothing.

In addition, Ms. Pace is a 2008 inductee into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame and a finalist for the 2009 Long Island Business News Health Care Heroes Award.

“I am honored to join this prestigious group of women for this very special ceremony,” Ms. Pace said. “I would like to thank County Executive Steve Levy for this honor which also recognizes the important contributions that Breast Cancer Help has made in the education and awareness of breast cancer issues here on Long Island.”

Suffolk’s Women’s Wall of Fame honors the “best of the best,” outstanding women who have selflessly devoted their energies and talents to the advancement and well-being of women in the county — pouring their time, talents, and hearts into that effort, sometimes at great personal sacrifice.

“It is an honor to recognize all of these remarkable women for all the good things they have done for the county and its residents,” Mr. Levy said. “These ‘hall of famers’ are the true pillars of our community and this Wall of Fame will serve as a tribute to them.”
