Breast Cancer Help Honors Volunteers at Annual Gala

October 13, 2009

On September 24, Breast Cancer Help, Inc. held its 14th Annual Gala at Captain Bill's Bayview House in Bay Shore. Breast Cancer Help honored several people for volunteering their time and talents in supporting Breast Cancer Help's cause.

Janet Rodgers, Cancer Research Fund Co-Chair, Order of the Sons of Italy in America, Grand Lodge of New York, was presented with the Harry Ballard Humanitarian Award. The award is named for the late founder of Earthrite Textile Recycling who also created Breast Cancer Help's clothing bin program. At the event, Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan presented a proclamation to Ms. Rodgers for her 10 years of service with Breast Cancer Help and her being bestowed with the Harry Ballard Award.

This year's Volunteer Fundraisers of the Year were Maria Capp, a Sayville resident, and Dennis Bennett, Robert Cook, Mike Doherty and James Gilroy, all of Oysterman's Restaurant and Pub in Sayville. On June 3, Ms. Capp held a fundraiser in memory of her cousin, Stephanie D'Agostino, who succumbed to breast cancer on January 3 at the age of 46. The event raised more than $8,000. Oysterman's Restaurant was the site of many Breast Cancer Help events, including the Stephanie D'Agostino fundraiser and the October 4 "Band Together to Beat Breast Cancer" benefit concert.

Proceeds from the event went to benefit Breast Cancer Help, the Long Island Help and Wellness Center and the continuance of the programs that they operate. Breast Cancer Help's approach to advocacy includes promoting education and awareness of the disease, working to bring about positive changes in the environment, raising funds to help ensure that Long Islanders have access to the best possible medical care, and providing psychosocial support services and programs for breast cancer patients and survivors, as well as the research into the causes and cure of breast cancer.
